Gerard Basset

Gerard Basset MS MW OBE was born and raised in France. Having qualified as a chef, he moved to England in the mid-1980s, embarking on a successful career as a sommelier. His achievements range from winning, on several occasions, the Best Sommelier in the UK title, as well as Best International Sommelier for French Wines in 1992 and Best Sommelier of Europe in 1996; he also finished second three times in the Best Sommelier of the World (1992, 2004, and 2007), before winning the title in 2010. Gerard is currently the only person to be a Master Sommelier, Master of Wine, and Wine MBA. He has also demonstrated a flair for business. In 1994 he co-founded the Hotel du Vin, selling in 2004 after having successfully opened six hotels. In 2007, with his wife Nina, he opened Hotel TerraVina, which has already won a number of awards and much critical acclaim.
