SR | Can Schlossberg do Gewurztraminer without being swept away by the grape's prominent flavors? Yes, Schlossberg can! This is a beautiful example that pairs the precision and flintiness of the granite Schlossberg terroir with perfectly ripe and fresh Traminer notes, here reminiscent of litchees, rose petals, and spices, intertwined with notes of salt, fresh-cut grass, broken rocks, flowers, and herbs. Round, lush, and elegant on the palate, this is a generous and balanced Schlossberg, with stimulating lemon and grapefruit bitters on the finish, which is structured by a fine and saline acidity and delicate tannins. The finish is long, even mouthwatering, and beautifully bitter. The wine might not be bone-dry, but is round and lush and very sensual without being in any sense overdone. 92
AJ | Pale and bright, with green and silver glints. Very pretty aromas. The great hill of Schlossberg seems to drain away all the baroque fanfare of Gewurz, and you are left with a Japanese sketch of cream, petals, and jasmine flowers, suggesting as much as is stated. Gorgeous. On the palate, it plays the varietal card a little more forcefully: rounded and sweet-fleshed, with fragrant spice as well as cream. The acidity is relatively low and there is some tannin, though less than you might find in Gewurz from other sites. Again, very unBaroque on the palate, barely even "rich," but graceful and true to both variety and site. I don't see much "stone" here. Calm, Zen drinking. 91
AR | A bright, pale, lemony green in color, this has a fine, classic Gewurz perfume of rose petal, pot pourri, and litchee, and it's fresh and bright, too; there's an appealing, gentle, Turkish delight and orange blossom mid-palate opulence, which doesn't pall thanks to a nicely balancing juicy freshness, and while full-bodied, it doesn't feel excessively alcoholic and finishes nicely dry. 92
