Reader offer: A new map of the Douro

By Thierry Dessauve

To celebrate the London launch of The New Illustrated Map of the Douro by David Eley, The World of Fine Wine is delighted to offer readers the opportunity to purchase the very first UK copies of the full- and half-size limited editions. For a strictly limited period, readers may subscribe to this offer at a substantially reduced purchase price, exclusive to WFW. The offer ends January 30, 2013.

It is more than 160 years since Baron Joseph James Forrester created his iconic map of the River Douro and its Port-wine quintas. Inspired by that original work, English artist David Eley-see “Mapping the Douro,” p.93- has created a 21st-century definition of the modern Douro, measuring some 10ft (3m) in length and comprising 130 illustrations depicting the principal winemaking quintas, flora, and fauna. This beautiful wine map, endorsed by UNESCO World Heritage, has now been published in two archival editions for framing and wall mounting: a full size Quinta Edition pigment print and half-size Collector’s Edition.

Adrian Bridge, CEO of the Fladgate Partnership and The Yeatman declared, “The first new map for over 160 years is a significant development in the history of the Douro Valley and one that we are proud to help bring to fruition.” For full purchasing details, visit finewinedouromapoffer.com, email info@surfaceinterest.com, telephone +351 919 717 696, or write to Douro Map Offer, The World of Fine Wine, 230 City Road, London EC1V 2TT, UK.

Copies of the framed Royal Edition of The New Illustrated Map of the Douro, together with classic Vintage Port wines, will be included in the March 21, 2013, sale at Christie’s in London. The combined map-and- Vintage Port sale will be the first of its kind and marks the publication of the Royal Edition in the UK. Vintage Port wines will be strictly limited with each map and will comprise classic vintages of Noval Nacional, Noval Colheitas, Fonseca, and Taylor’s 100-point wines, plus four separate vintages of Graham’s. There will also be a presale tasting to include Noval Nacional and Noval 1968 Colheita.
