Achaval Ferrer’s highly acclaimed 2018 Malbecs

By Sponsored Content

Achaval Ferrer has launched the 2018 vintage of its highly acclaimed Malbecs.

Long before Mendoza became famous as one of the most important terroirs on the globe and Malbec earned its renown as a world-class variety in its own right, a handful of Argentine wineries were already garnering global recognition for their wines.

Among these was Achaval Ferrer, who had discovered and restored several century-old, ungrafted Malbec vineyards in Mendoza before harvesting them to produce exclusive single-vineyard Malbecs that have now become an essential piece of the global wine scene.

These were Finca Bella Vista, Finca Mirador and Finca Altamira, Achaval Ferrer’s three Malbecs whose 2018 vintage was recently introduced to the world.

2018, an exceptional vintage for Achaval Ferrer

After four challenging years, 2018 marked a return to normal for the climate in Mendoza. ‘The weather was excellent,’ says Gustavo Rearte, Head Winemaker at Achaval Ferrer. ‘We got back to a textbook season that allowed us to achieve perfect ripeness thanks to the dry, cool climate and consistent sunlight.’

Although it was slightly damper than usual, the temperatures were warmer meaning that the wines grew more complex and intense during the summer of 2018. The ripening period added depth and silky tannins while the average to low rainfall and constant temperatures in the run up to harvest enhanced the complexity in the mouth and ensured excellent aging potential.

Achaval Ferrer present an elegant vintage from their three Fincas

Thanks to the superb conditions enjoyed in 2018, Achaval Ferrer is proud to present one of their most elegant editions of their Finca trilogy ever. “The 2018 wines are harmonious, elegant and complex expressions of our vineyards,” says Rearte.

Finca Altamira 2018, from a vineyard planted in 1950 in Paraje Altamira, in the Uco Valley, has achieved the perfect balance between ripe fruit and natural acidity with notes of citrus, balsam and minerals and a subtle, taut palate followed by a lengthy, balanced finish.

Finca Mirador 2018, meanwhile, made with grapes from a 1921 vineyard planted in a dried river bed in Medrano, Maipu, presents notes of spice, a fruity character and a hint of graphite with good tannic structure balanced by the rich natural acidity typical of the vineyard.

Finally, Finca Bella Vista 2018 hails from a 1910 vineyard located on the southern shore of the Mendoza River in Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, and offers floral, fruit and spice notes accompanied by the silky tannins brought by the clay/loam soils of Finca Bella Vista.

Extremely limited quantities of these three Malbecs have been carefully allocated in 35 different markets. Total worldwide allocation for the three wines is: 8,400 bottles of Achaval Ferrer Finca Bella Vista 2018; 4,370 bottles of Achaval Ferrer Finca Mirador 2018; and 8,620 bottles of Achaval Ferrer Finca Altamira 2018.
