The main dining room of Operakällaren has a grand setting in Stockholm’s Royal Opera House—all oak paneling, oil paintings, gold mirrors, and chandeliers. It’s an historic home for both the newly Michelin-starred “international haute cuisine” of chef Stefano Catenacci and the suitably grand wine list that has a deserved reputation as one of the best in Scandinavia. Classic in conception, Operakällaren’s list was commended by the judges at The World’s Best Wine Lists Awards for its collection of verticals from big gun European producers. France leads the way, with multiple vintages of grands crus but producers such as Germany’s Georg Breuer, Austria’s Prager and Pichler, and Madiran’s Alain Brumont are also extensively presented, along with a number of top Californians from the likes of Harlan and Philip Togni. Equally impressive is the section of the list that earned Operakällaren a place on the shortlist for Best Dessert & Fortified Wine List in Europe, a neat, wide-ranging collection of sweet styles that offers both Edi Simcic Edijev Izbor 1998 from Slovenia and a vertical of Château d’Yquem.
