Offering plenty of “imaginative, eclectic choices amid the classics,” the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists 2015 described the wine menu at the Charleston Grill in South Carolina as a “very nice clear-cut list with some nice Greek accents.”
Those “Greek accents” are sprinkled throughout the list and include Gentilini, Ribola from Cephalonia, Sigalas Assyrtiko from Santorini, and Alpha Xinomavro from Amyndeon. And there are plenty of other exotic choices – from South Africa to Lebanon – in a long and engaging list that is not afraid to mix it up, without neglecting what is a truly impressive collection of producers and vintages from the USA and classical Europe.
It all makes for a splendidly diverse compilation of more than 1,300 wines from which to choose a match for chef Michelle Weaver’s imaginative menu, which is divided into four distinct categories, “Pure, Lush, Southern, and Cosmopolitan,” and includes such signature dishes as braised pork shank, Sea Island red peas, collard grens, scallion corn bread, and smoked jowl jus.
