Acquerello

By Alex Hunt MW

Since opening its doors in San Francisco’s Nob Hill district in 1989, Acquerello has maintained a reputation for fine Italian food, service and, most importantly for this award, wine. The Michelin star earned for the first time in 2007 is testament to the quality of the cooking in dishes such as scallop crudo with fregula, citrus, and smoked trout roe; or Creekstone Black Angus filet, cipolline, panelle, currant, and charred onion crème fraiche.

The wine list is a destination in itself. It’s a celebration, as might be expected, of Italy, and particularly Piedmont, which is covered in remarkable depth. But it also features a fine selection of grower Champagnes and a broad sweep of Italian sparkling wines from across the country. As the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists 2015 said, “It’s a simply gorgeous Italian American list. Wow! And we love the great presence of the Italian south in particular.”
