Atrio

By Alex Hunt MW

The wine list at the two-Michelin-starred Atrio in Cáceres, Extremadura, has a lot going for it. For a start, it is beautifully and clearly presented, but is also full of genuinely informative notes and background material on the world’s wine regions; it’s a pleasure to read and browse from. As the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists Awards have put it, “Atrio’s list immediately strikes you as being a beautifully designed book (that one would happily display on one’s coffee table) rather than a wine list. It contains explanations, history, and original photography—it’s a special list.”

More importantly of course, it also contains some great wines, a superb spread of top Spanish producers including multiple vintages from great Rioja estates, and a no less intelligent choice of French and global bottles. The 2018 judges commended the list for its excellent collection of sherry and port and its old vintages of Chateau d’Yquem as well. In summary, it’s a worthy match for the locally influenced, honest, but refined menu created by Juan Antonio “Toño” Pérez.
