La Trompette

By Thierry Dessauve

West London’s La Trompette was much missed by its regulars when it closed for refurbishment in 2013. But Nigel Platts-Martin and Bruce Poole’s vision—“to serve some of the best food in London but without the formality or prices associated with the capital’s top end establishments”—is still very much intact post-makeover. Equally important for the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists awards, the pair’s veracious love of wine also remains in full.

As with Platts-Martin’s and Poole’s other London venues (Wandsworth’s Chez Bruce and The Glasshouse at Kew) La Trompette offers one of the most extensive but carefully considered compilations of international wines around. There is flair and interest throughout a list that is not afraid to mix up the relatively little known and funky (Domaine Gerovassiliou Malagousia from Greece; Patrick Frick Chasselas Zéro Sulfite Ajouté from Alsace) with mature vintages of the established classics (Harlan Estate 1998; Latour 1970). Just as appealing as the names on the list are the numbers beside them: no matter the wine, every bin on the list is offered at a very reasonable price.
