L’Arcangelo Rome

By Thierry Dessauve

Chef Arcangelo Dandini is known for his pitch-perfect presentation of la cucina Romana, with a menu of local classics such as stewed oxtail and gnocchi alla matriciana. To this unpretentious but immaculately cooked menu, he adds a similarly down-to-earth, short but creative and well-priced wine list.

The judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists awards admired the concision of a list where every bin counts, and where smart international choices mix with a whistle-stop tour of the Italian regions. At L’Arcangelo, you can choose both the small-producer Champagne of Jacquesson Cuvée 732 and Trentino sparkling wine producer Ferrari’s Metodo Classico Riserva del Fondatore 1996; Sicily’s Planeta and Cusumano mix it with the Rhône’s Château Rayas and Yann Chave; and a vertical of magnums of Sassicaia from 2003 to 1990 rubs shoulders with Slovenia’s Edi Simcic and California’s Montelena. Easy and quick to browse through, but fun to drink from: the essence of a good wine list.
