World’s Best Wine Lists Jury Prize

The by-the-glass selection is what first caught the eye of the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists awards as they perused the list at Marea— New York’s sophisticated exponent of Italian “coastal cuisine.”

Elin McCoy called it “extraordinary, a list of wide appeal full of amazing wines to taste.” McCoy was thinking of wines such as Soldera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2000, or Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2011 from the restaurant’s premium by-the-glass selection. But the variety on the more accessibly priced by-the-glass list was equally impressive, with choices from Burgundy and Greece interspersed with a wide array of intriguing Italians.

The Marea team are no less competent in their bottle selection, which, while including intelligent (and delicious) choices from around the world, was particularly strong in Italy. The length and breadth of the country is represented, with an eye-catching array of mature vintages from Tuscany and Piedmont: a selection that earned a special Jury Prize from the judges for “breadth and depth of Italian wine, both by the bottle and by the glass.”
