Noto’s Old World Italian Dining

By Thierry Dessauve

For sheer breadth and depth of range, there can be few Italian wine lists anywhere in the world to match the one assembled by the Noto family in their eponymous restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Just as the menu has carefully evolved since Noto’s first began serving its skilful take on traditional Italian family recipes in 1982, so the wine list, while certainly “Old World” in the strict sense of its origins, has moved with the times.

So, yes, this is the place to come to if you want to find a peerless collection of the grandest names in Italian wine. But the list at Noto’s also reflects the dynamic modern Italian wine industry, in every corner of the boot: from the sparkling wines of Ca’ del Bosco in Franciacorta in Lombardy, to the stunning Etna red of Tenuta delle Terre Nere. With a well-chosen selection of 50 bottles under £50, and a set of attractively priced by-the-glass flights, not to mention a series of engaging explanatory notes, there is a democratic feel to the list that betrays a genuine love of fine Italian wine.
