One Penny Red

By Thierry Dessauve

One Penny Red is a great example of a restaurant that dedicates time and research into ensuring its customers can discover the story behind the wine, and the people that got it to the table. This is the case with its resident wine, Montevecchio, which is estate-grown, handmade wine from the Chalmers family vineyard in Heathcote in Victoria. The Chalmers family vineyard has been supporting sustainable winemaking for the last 20 years, and on this list offers some natural, everyday-drinking wines in the form of Montevecchio Bianco, 2014, and Rosso, 2014. The wine list has a strong focus on local Australian wine but ensures there are also international choices with names like Joh Jos Prum in the Riesling selection, accompanied with notes on the producer, and white Burgundy, with a description of Domaine Fanny Sabre, for example.

The food menu embodies contemporary yet hearty and brings its own unique touch. Spirited commentary such as ‘made close by’ and ‘from afar’ in the Pinot Noir section, which includes names like Mac Forbes, Stoney Vineyard, Burn Cottage, and Domaine de la Cote, Bernard Huber, Le Fou; all contribute to making this an enjoyable to read and informative wine list.
