Oviedo

By Thierry Dessauve

One of the world’s most extensive collections of fine Argentine red wine leads off the list at Buenos Aires’ Oviedo Restaurante. A detailed overview of this great wine country’s leading producers, it features multiple vintages from the likes of Achaval Ferrer, Catena Zapata, Chacra, Cheval des Andes, Finca La Anita, Noemia, Mendel, and Rutini, as well as old school gems such as Cavas de Weinert 1986.

Although these fine Argentines are complemented and contextualized by a range of top Europeans—from Spain’s Vega-Sicilia to a run of mature Bordeaux and Port—the list is not solely about big guns. There is a wide-ranging selection, too, of affordable Argentine bottles that give full rein to the country’s varietal diversity— from Colomé Torrontés to Nieto Senetiner Reserva Bonarda—all designed to complement the mix of exquisitely presented food, which includes some of the world’s greatest seafood cuisine.
