Porter House New York

By Thierry Dessauve

Described by the judges of the World’s Best Wine Lists as “utterly comprehensive, from glass to half-bottle to full-bottle,” the wine list at New York steakhouse Porter House is “outstanding.”

There is space at Porter House for a number of the acknowledged greats of European and American wine: from JL Chave in Hermitage and François Raveneau in Chablis to Heitz Martha’s Vineyard 1985 and verticals of Ridge Monte Bello, plus magnums of Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes Mares and Château Latour. But there are also a great many affordable and esoteric selections, from Wind Gap Trousseau Gris Fannuci-Wood Road to Cantina Bolzano Perl Lagrein.

Very clearly presented by country, region, and style, the list runs to a manageable 500 bins, and is full of personality from start to end. There is a sense that it has been put together with real care and attention by a group of committed oenophiles, always with the “big juicy steaks” and other “American flavors” of Michael Lomonaco’s menu in mind.
