Restaurante Kaia – Kaipe

By Thierry Dessauve

World’s Best Wine Lists Jury Prize

Is there a better collection of Spanish wine in the world than the one held in the Vinoteca at San Sebastian’s Restaurante Kaia-Kaipe restaurant? If there is, the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists awards have yet to find it—and certainly not offering the same staggeringly affordable prices.

Among the spectacular collection of more than 1,000 labels, a particular highlight is the selection of verticals from Rioja bodegas. This is full of surprises: featuring both very old vintages of big brands (such as Campo Viejo 1963 or Paternina Viña Vial Crianza 1970) and the fine-wine stars of Rioja both modern (Remírez de Ganuza Gran Reserva 2004) and traditional (Bodegas López de Heredia Bosconia Gran Reserva 1981).

But there are fascinating venerable red finds from the rest of Spain, too: from Ribera del Duero, to Bierzo, and from Priorat to Navarra, not to mention a wonderful choice of new wave and traditional Spanish whites. With the Iberians given context by a smart selection of international wines and Champagne, the list at Kaia-Kaipe was a unanimous pick by the judges for a special Jury Prize for Spanish wine.
