Via Veneto

By Thierry Dessauve

Based in a beautiful Catalan modernist building, father-and-son team José and Pedro Monje’s Barcelona restaurant Via Veneto is a standard-bearer for refined Catalan cuisine.

The Michelin-starred menu offers a light contemporary take on Catalan culinary traditions, making the most of local ingredients in dishes such as bouillabaisse of fish and shellfish from Palamos market, and roasted and lacquered Tostón suckling pig with crispy tail and millefeuilles of potato and “perol” pork sausage.

The wine list, meanwhile, is a draw in itself, and not only for the superb collection of Catalan wines, from Priorat and Montsant to Empordà and Costers del Segre.

There’s a fine array, too, of vintages and producers from across Spain’s many DOs, from modernist and traditional red Rioja to the Galician whites of Rías Baixas and Ribeiro. And these are joined by fine selections from classical France, Germany, Portugal, and the USA.
