Chef and restaurateur Andrew McConnell opened Cumulus Inc. in 2008 in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. Situated in the cultural city’s celebrated art and fashion precinct on Flinders Lane, Cumulus Inc. covers all bases for good coffee, snacks, full all-day meals, and drinks. It does, of course, have an excellent wine offering. The international wine list showcases Australian wine with a primary focus on local wineries. Judges commented that the list was just the right length with unknown names, but not without main players from France and Italy, and names like Joh Jos Prüem to complete the Riesling selection, for example. As part of the Australian selection they will still go down the road to Geelong, just outside of Melbourne, for a local bottle of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. Australia’s big wine regions get a good look into, with a hearty helping of wines from Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Margaret River, and also Nagambie, Macedon Ranges, and Heathcote.
Claiming a prestigious three-star award in its debut into the World’s Best Wine Lists in 2017, Cumulus Inc. is certainly hitting the high notes for its wine offering. What is also exciting to see is the wide range of sparkling wine options from Australia, including local sparkling rosé such as Geelong’s NV Oakdene Rosé, and Kreglinger Brut Rosé Pipers Brook 2005, plus a non-vintage Blauer Wildbacher Sekt from Franz Strohmeier.
