Located on the 79th floor of the Shangri-La group’s China World Summit Wing Hotel, Grill 79’s menu has earned a fine reputation for its creative blend of Asian and European influences. The east-meets-west cuisine is expressed in dishes such as lobster and daikon salad, pickled Japanese mushroom with jasmine tea and grapefruit jelly; and baked silver cod, mushroom carbonara with asparagus and braised Iberico pork cheek.
The wine list reflects the international mood, taking in collections of wines from both Europe (including many mature vintages from top Bordeaux and Burgundy producers) and the New World. It’s an approach that is captured in microcosm in the neat, well-chosen by-the-glass program where Domaine Girardin Bourgogne Rouge 2009 and Casa Lapostolle Cuvée Alexandre Merlot 2007 are listed alongside Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Alsace 2007, Laurenz V Grüner Veltliner Kamptal 2005, and a pair of wines (a Chardonnay and a Cabernet) from China’s own Grace Vineyard.
