Monster Kitchen

By Thierry Dessauve

Nestled in one of Canberra’s hippest hotels, Monster Bar & Kitchen places a strong emphasis on seasonal and local produce prepared for sharing.

Described as having “multiple personalities”, the restaurant is led by head chef Sean McConnell, the genius behind Mocan & Green Grout Café.

Monster turns the charm from dawn till dusk, guaranteeing something for everyone – early risers can enjoy their brunch and caffeine fix, while late risers can enjoy the bar menu and shared plates on offer.

Located in a vast lobby of Hotel Hotel, the industrial-inspired décor includes concrete and copper, while the soft leather seats are made for settling with a Martini.

Michael Gray, the hotel maitre d’ at large, is responsible for the wine list and his level of expertise is evident. Canberra district wines are in abundance, as are picks from France, Germany, Greece and Spain, with plenty to satisfy in the sub $50 range, holding interest and affordability at equal measure.
