Prime

By Thierry Dessauve

Locavores are well served by Long Island’s Prime. There is the plentiful local fish on the menu, for one thing, prepared both as a great variety of sushi and from the grill, in a dining room overlooking Huntington Harbour. Then there is the wine list, which features some 30 selections from the local New York state wine scene. From Dr Frank’s Rkatsiteli, Keuka Lake, to Wolffer Estate Chardonnay, The Hamptons; and from Macari Solo Uno North Fork 2005 Bordeaux blend to Sherwood House Cabernet Franc 2008, the “New York state of wine” is but one highlight of an engaging global list that is also strong in wines from the West Coast (Oregon and Washington State as well as a long list of historic and emerging California producers). Further afield, for once it’s the Rhône rather than Bordeaux and Burgundy of the classic big three French red wine regions that is given the most space with Allemand Cornas “Chaillot” 2005 and Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Roger Perrin, la Vieille Julienne, La Janasse, and Vieux Télégraphe, among others, while Italy, Spain, and South America are also given prime positions.
