Based in a reconstructed Victorian house in the Northern Californian city of Eureka, there’s a homespun feel to proceedings at Restaurant 301. The menu draws on ingredients grown in the family Carter’s own garden, supplemented by those bought in from local Humboldt County suppliers. And the Carters also produce their own wine: a small production label, Carter Cellars, in the Napa Valley, which naturally finds a place on the Restaurant 301 list.
They have to fight for attention, however, since the list at Restaurant 301 is among the most comprehensive around, with more than 3,400 different labels. The heart of that list is a magnificent collection of mature vintages from the best Californian producers: verticals of Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley dating back to 1973, for example, or Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain back to 1980. These are complemented by similarly impressive back vintages from classic France and Italy, in a special list for a special place.
