British chef Darren Velvick is the name on the door at Table 9, a venture set up by ex-Gordon Ramsay team members Nick Alvis and Scott Price at the Hilton Dubai Creek hotel. Focusing on “the natural goodness of fresh, seasonal vegetables,” Velvick’s slick, modern British and European style is represented by signature dishes such as sea bass, cauliflower, and almond; and mackerel tartare, lime, avocado, and crème fraîche.
The nicely manageable, concise wine list assembled to accompany Velvick’s cooking is suitably modern in outlook, and filled with funky choices, making it a worthy winner of the Best Short Wine List in Africa & The Middle East.
As senior judge Alder Yarrow said, “It has lots of very interesting by-the-glass wines, and very few pedestrian wines. There are choices such as Château de la Nerthe 1994.” Fellow judge Elin McCoy agreed, and also singled out the “excellent” set of rare and mature reserve wines.
