Nigel Platts-Martin and Bruce Poole, the co-owners of Kew’s Glasshouse, are familiar figures to the UK wine trade, having made a feature of fine wine at both the Glasshouse and sister restaurants Chez Bruce in Wandsworth Common and La Trompette in Chiswick. Now under the control of head sommelier Milena Di Francisco, the list at The Glasshouse, designed to accompany Poole’s and head chef Matt Christmas’ modern “regional French and Mediterranean-inspired” food, continues to impress, with its long but discriminating and well-priced pick of classic and rising-star producers from across the globe.
On a list of many strengths, the judges at the World’s Best Wine Lists awards picked out as highlights the imaginative selection of new-wave Spanish wines, from producers such as Jiménez-Landi in Mentrida and Coto de Gomariz in Ribeiro; the regional French wines from the likes of Lapeyre in Jurançon and Domaine Léon Barral in Faugères; and the willingness to look beyond the obvious big names in Bordeaux and Burgundy. With choices from Japan, Slovenia, Hungary, and excellent Australians and Austrians, among many others, this is a bold, imaginative list from a wine-loving restaurant for wine lovers.
