Located in the very heart of California wine country in the center of St-Helena, Tra Vigne’s stated mission is to deliver “a blend of Old World Italy and the fresh, local ingredients of wine country.”
That translates into a range of gently innovative modern Italian dishes such as slow-cooked Sonoma duck leg risotto with carnaroli rice, green apples, thyme, and Cavedoni aged balsamico or Brandt Family Beef grilled “berretta” steak with gorgonzola potato gratin, Brussels sprouts, and hen of the woods mushroom sauce.
A good wine list is a must in this location, of course, but Tra Vigne goes beyond the call of duty with 540 bins in an exceptionally thoughtful, clearly arranged collection of Californian and Italian wines.
Among the many highlights are the “Sommelier’s Selections,” which at the time of judging drew attention to Oakville East Core Stone Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc 2009 and Marisa Cuomo Fiorduva Fenile, Ginestra & Ripoli 2010 from Campania. But this is a list packed full of Cal-Ital treats, complemented by a smattering of grower and Grande Marque Champagne.
