Neil Beckett | A vineyard with an historic reputation stretching all the way back to its 12th-century Cistercian origins, so small wonder that Bénigne Joliet, the sixth generation of his family to own it, hopes that it may yet be promoted to grand cru—especially given the heights he has been scaling since 2005, focusing all his efforts on this one special vineyard (though several parcels are separately vinified and he also produces an intriguing white wine). In 2016, yields were only 22hl/ha and 70% of the stems were retained, but the extraction was gentle. An intense, ripe, spicy nose (but only 20% new oak). Layered richness and seductive softness, thanks to the silken tannins, but the balance, freshness, and poise are equally winning. Prices may have been rising since 2005, but this is still spectacular value. | 92
