Neil Beckett: Medium-deep ruby (as are all of the Amboise wines this year). Very rich, ripe, strongly fruited nose (only 20 per cent new oak). Astonishingly concentrated for a ‘generic’ wine – there are grands crus with less matière than this – the 40- year-old vines yielding only 25hl/ha this year. Masses of rich black fruit on the mid-palate and powerful, ripe, rubbery tannins that still need three to five years to soften. But it should be well worth the wait. Sensational value.
