Syrah at altitude is in charge here, with small (as in 2–3%) co-planted Roussanne and Viognier recalling northern blends, even if we are appreciably farther south of the northerly Côtes-du-Rhône villages that sometimes perform thus—most significantly, Visan and Vinsobres. There is northern purity and definition here, however; Syrah makes up more than 60% of the blend. 18 months in barrique initially grips the glass, the firm acidity holding it together magnificently, and beyond the youthful nutmeg and crème brûlée there is plenty of red and blue fruit, velvety sophistication, and depth of flavor. Underpinning it all, appreciable freshness. One suspects that Héloïse was, at heart, somewhat feisty. Determined, for sure—and there is grip behind the charm here. | 91
