Michael Edwards: Of the undoubtedly fine vintages of the 1980s, 1983 has stood a little in the shadow of the highly praised 1982. But there have always been some fine tasters who prefer the younger vintage. I modestly join their number, being old enough to remember tasting the CH 1983s— both the assemblage Brut and the Blanc des Millénaires—in the 1990s with Daniel Thibault, then the CH chef de cave and probably the greatest winemaker of his generation. This ’83 today shows perfect à point maturity, with a dash of expressive spiciness and ongoing vigor. Lovely. (bottle; disgorged 1991)
