Roy Hersh: The darkest Port of the flight, though it appeared nearly the same as Cockburn’s in decanter. A spot on Corney & Barrow bottling. Exotically perfumed bouquet of sweet strawberry, toffee, leather, cedar, and a hint of fennel in the background. Medium-weight, sumptuously rich and warming. Overall, it’s seemingly young for a Vargellas Port at seven decades of age. Blind, I’d have guessed 1967, but I’ve had a great 1912 Vargellas that showed even younger. Proffering black raspberry and ripe black plum flavors, precisely balanced with a scoach of toffee on the long and intense finish. Complex in all respects, with 10–20 more years of drinking ahead.
