Stephen Brook: Muted blackcurrant, mocha, and cherry nose, with some lift and freshness. Mediumbodied, this has a graceful character that is lacking in the other reds. It’s less forceful and assertive, but the limpidity is welcome. The acidity confers freshness not rawness. This may be less rich than some other reds here, but it’s balanced and shows some charm and moreishness. A model of restraint—and good length, too. 90
Andrew Jefford: Deep black-red. Sweet, faintly composty aromas with a perfumed note, too. Slightly strange and kinky but not unattractive. Quite a simple fruit style here compared to the best of its peers but redeemed by the Virginia tannins that carry the wine and give it a seriousness that the fruit can’t quite manage. 86
