Serena Sutcliffe: Vintage September 28–October 10. An extremely low yield of 20hl/ha, the aftermath of the February 1956 frost from which this part of St-Emilion suffered so cruelly. 13% ABV. They know at the Château that there are variable bottles—some with high volatile acidity, owing to the integration of some bad press wine, but I have been lucky and had magnificent bottles, never more so than onthis occasion. Very meaty nose. So immense, full, and luscious. Flavors of meat and jam. Incredible to the finish. Incidentally, Gaston Vaissière, the old maître de chai, always recommended tasting the 1959 immediately after opening, with no decanting, since he did not think that contact with the air was beneficial for this vintage.
