Michael Schuster: Wonderfully freshly fragrant, fruitcored nose, the fine pepper and minerals of young Vargellas, very promising; nicely balanced, elegant, middleweight, with the notable freshness of the year, typically fine in tannin; long, sweet, and fresh in the mouth, lovely, gentle, yet well-defined fruit, and a fine, minerally aromatic fruit persistence. Typically stylish, similar in weight and quality to the ’98, a little richer perhaps, but not the fruit-packed completeness of the 2005 or 2001. Will be accessible relatively early. 2012–25 (January 2009). 17
