Andrew Jefford: Deep, clear black-red in color. Sweet, warm aromatic profile, with lots of plush raspberry. Not jammy, however. Some vanilla. Vivid, impressively concentrated palate; mouth-filling; the raspberry fruits taper away toward a slightly leafy dryness at the very end. Chunky, well built in overall terms, and better tannins than many in this tasting. Serious Pinot, though you get the sense that location or climate is pushing it toward the slightly sinewy limits of what the variety will permit. It is, though, inside those limits, and it retains plenty of expressive force as a poised Pinot. Australia? 14
Anthony Rose: Deep in color, this is very closed on the nose, giving very little away at this stage—a tad disappointing when lift and fragrance is so much the hallmark of good Pinot Noir. There’s some powerful sweet dark-berry fruitiness on the palate, etched with sharpish tart acidity and fairly firm, robust tannins; in fact, the extraction levels and slightly sharp acidity don’t make this easy, though youthfulness may be part of the problem—and the solution. Australia. 16
Joanna Simon: Very deep color. Not very aromatic, but some gentle briery and vanilla notes. Big, ripe, black-cherry palate, with oak and spice and heat. Slightly tarry. High alcohol. Lacks finesse. Australia? 12
