Alex Hunt: Relatively rustic, rocky, rumbustious nose. This feels a bit overextracted. Very powdery tannins dominate what is, after five years, quite delicate fruit. There is some poise and complexity here, but the balance is slightly off - 14.5
Andrew Jefford: Dense, deep black-red. Lovely evolution here, and well done for that: this has moved on from sheer sweet fruit toward something a little more glowing and ember-like. Ruffled black chocolate and charcoal mingle with the dark berries and plums. On the palate, too, this is deep, gratifying, very ripe, but a little more secondary than many of the wines we have scrutinized. The result is a hugely hedonistic red of the first order, yet with its structure intact; further intriguing “developmental developments” seem certain for the decade to come. Bravo. Perfumed licorice (that hallmark of early secondary aromatics for so many varieties) drifts across the finish. It’s not quite “serious” but is very nearly there - 17
Jancis Robinson: Very dark crimson. Sweet, pretty, with a light green streak and definitively Chilean. A bit stringy. The fruit is difficult to discern as the astringency is rather overwhelming. Points up that this is from another era? (Drink 2009–12.) 16
