Andrew Jefford: dense, saturated black-red. aromatically, the wine is buzzing—with lavender, broom, jasmine, and cistus. Lifted, fragrant; very Mediterranean. the palate is rich, dense, and powerful, a melange of sweeter notes (dark plum and fig) with dryer asperities: olive prunings and vine prunings, charred meat and crushed rock. generous tannins give it plenty of fi re and force; the acidity is almost invisible —but those asperities, so evident in the finish, do the work of acidity, and the wine is brushed fresh and clean by the finish. the alcohol is beautifully integrated and unobtrusive. grand wine of great refinement. 17.5
Simon Larkin : Interesting if less overt aromatics here; with air, notes of dusky berry and cherry emerge, admirably fresh. this reveals a pleasing texture, deep, dark fruit with discreet notes of garrigue. Very well made and complete—detractors may highlight the alcoholic warmth on the finish, but there is an abundant, succulent nature to the fruit that captures notes of blueberry, spiced raspberry, and dark cherry. there is that classic baked touch, which adds to the generosity in this elegant, impeccably made example. I think it is the sense of ampleness, coupled to the purity of fruit, that impresses most in a wine of this level. ahead of the pack so far, and an impressive opener for the estate. 15.5
John Livingstone-Learmonth: Rather dark robe; stately, appealing bouquet, holder of 2010 balance right from the off. Some dark berry airs lurk inside, not yet out on full parade, with a semblance of brioche, baked bread. the attack is appealing, curvy, bears dark red berry fruits, with engaging tannins right in step. Ends on good run of dark, clear-cut, more tannic, licorice flavors. Very long. Fine, true, well-orchestrated châteauneuf. drink now on youthful allure, but it will live well, thanks to its balance and spice. now to 2029/31. 18.5
