Jesús Barquín: Especially dense and deep. The nose is very ripe and warm, jammy, with a hint of VA, wanting better delineation. Better definition on the palate, seriously complex but with drying tannins. Perhaps the wine is undergoing a difficult moment in its evolution and eventually will polish those defects, but right now it lacks balance. 14
Nicolas Belfrage: Deep. A bit quiet on the nose; the palate reveals very firm tannins with concomitant bitterness and roughness in excess. Needs time to smooth those tannins. 14
Andrew Jefford: Deep, dense, and dark in color. Very harmonious and rounded on the aromas at this stage but lacks a little detail. Good levels of concentration and depth here, and the flavor profile (haunting black-cherry fruit, volcanic stone) are just what we hope for. Satisfying, long, generous, amply constructed (superb qualities of extract and tannic depth). This is an outstanding Amarone, with everything in place for the long haul. (The ripe, fruit-saturated acidity is mouthwatering, too.) I would feel churlish for docking any points for a lack of aromatic precision, since the overall aromatic shape is so classic—so I won’t. A lovely bottle. 16.5
