Stephen Brook: Medium straw. Stewed oaky nose, not very attractive—and the toastiness overwhelms the fruit. Broad, quite rich, full-bodied, but also rather hard and hollow, with a sour finish. This is not a success, and the balance is gawky. Medium length and a finish without charm. 11
Alex Hunt: This wine has an overt flinty-bonfire sulfide character that, while appealing in itself, masks Viognier character. The palate is leaner than it should be and tapers to a sinewy finish with uncharacteristically sour acidity. Were this Chardonnay, I would find it ambitious yet hard to love; as a Viognier, I struggle to find a raison d’être. 13
Andrew Jefford: The most deeply colored of our Ontario cohort. Like [Stratus Viognier Niagara-on-the-Lake VQA Ontario 2009], this has very attractive varietal aromas: heady and floral, with some fresh apricot beneath. A true Viognier aroma by any measure. Alas, on the palate it is relatively slender and green, slight and hard. My guess is that it takes the whole season to get into varietal gear but that there are just not enough calories in the summer here to build the ample flesh and richness you hope for in Viognier. 13
