Simon Field | Near obsidian at the core, a slender rim. Distinctive nose of bacon rind and raspberry jam (on toast that has just started to burn). These somewhat unusual impressions carry one to the palate, where the overall message is of an alcoholic burn and a drying finish, all semblance of structural harmony challenged and possibly vanquished by the stark backdrop provided by the new materials. Ill-fitting garments will seldom provide much pleasure. | 88
Andrew Jefford | Dense, dark black-red; still opaque, and with near-purple glints. Opulent, spicy-sweet fruits on the nose: plums and damsons packed in with herbs and forest leaves. Lovely scents, and very much of their place—plus the oak from elsewhere. Ample, spicy, rich, and deep: Exuberant, thoroughly enjoyable wine, with plenty of depth and extract, though I’d love to see an unoaked version of this, too. | 90
Anthony Rose | This has good color, youthfully ruby, a distinctive smell suggesting ripe dark fruit, and an almost Porty sweetness. It is very ripe to the taste, dark in fruit, initially soft and supple in mouth-coating sweetness of fruit on the tongue, thanks to that ripeness, before the tannins and the alcohol kick in in rustic mode. | 88
