Andrew Jefford | Deep, dark, glinting black-red. Harmonious, balanced, and settled now, with less primary fruit than is shown by most of its peers. Savory, classic, and appetizing St-Estèphe: firm-spined but elegant. Lots of depth and density here. The pill of cool acidity at least comes coated in some serious tannin in this wine, so the effect is savory overall, with some substance, earth, and stone. It’s balanced and unprimary, as the nose was. The appeal of Phélan Ségur is always on the severe side, though, so this vintage may appeal to long-term followers of the property. | 91
Michael Schuster | Rather dumb to smell for the moment, but a sweet black-fruit ripeness there; medium-full, a fresh defining acidity, and finely tannic. There is an elegance and a juiciness here that stands out in the 2017 context; within the slightly firm feel, this is long and fine, elegant, aromatic, and complex. Very good at its level in the context of the year, but this will need time, for sure. 2027–35+. | 89
