Andrew Jefford | The darkest wine in our Margaux cohort: saturated purple black-red, and color saturated right to the rim. Intriguing, singular aromas of fresh bread and as much plum as blackcurrant, with some citrus and spice, too. Someone has made huge efforts here this year, and this is both generous as well as classy and refined, with much more aromatic wealth than many of its Margaux peers. I’m looking forward to sipping. Ample, pure-fruited wealth on the palate, and a much riper fruit style than most Margaux peers: nothing lean here. But nothing exaggerated either, and no excess oak. It doesn’t, by contrast, have particularly ample tannins or textures but runs on weight of fruit alone. With fruit of this order, however, that’s a lot of running ahead. Bravo for this lovely 2016 Margaux. | 92
Michael Schuster | Dense and oak-cedary to smell; medium-full, fresh and moderately tannic; a sweetly ripe, quite rich, plummy core fruit framed by a moderately firm, slightly oak-dry tannin; a nice length of flavor and complexity here, and fine aromatic length; only the slightly oak-dry texture impinges on its overall harmony. Needs a few years. 2024–40+. | 92
