Stephen Brook | Gold. Surprisingly old-style on the nose, with barley-sugar and crème brûlée aromas. Yet it’s medium-bodied and lacks some weight and depth of flavor, though the texture is silky. There’s ample acidity that gives persistence and freshness to the finish, but it seems to lack complexity now, though it has more heft and swagger than many wines in this vintage. Long. | 93
Andrew Jefford | Pale old-gold: decidedly a deeper hue than its peers. Warm, sweet, honeyed, and pollen- rich, with some buttery wealth, too, this 2016 Sauternes seems to have got a little further than most of its peers in terms of aromatic development: barley-sugar and marzipan. Comforting and ample already, though it surely has more up its sleeve. On the palate, it is very rich and sugar-laden. I don’t find quite as much hidden perfume and succulence inside those sugars as inside some of the other, more evidently younger wines, but this will always be a head-turner. Just a little tangy already for this early stage in life. | 89
