Andrew Jefford: Clear deep scarlet, without as much black as the other 2018. Very powerful floral aromas, billowing and expansive; there isn’t anything Gewurztraminer-like here in terms of analogies, yet you might almost say that this wine has learned lessons from Gewurztraminer, and there is certainly no Sancerre equivalent of this level of perfume. Striking, exotic, beguiling. On the palate, too, this is vivid, voluptuous, mouth-filling, exotically perfumed (sandalwood, almonds, red flowers, star anis), relatively low in acidity. It has such a different manner of expression to the Sancerre cohort that it disconcerts at first—yet it is a gorgeously brocaded and lushly fruited wine with a huge amount to give. Very Alsace in that nose-turning, almost decadently scented way. I would greatly enjoy drinking this, though I have to admit it won’t be to everyone’s taste. | 91
Jasper Morris: fine, bright, youthful purple, with a vibrant energetic Pinot fruit, though a little more reserved than the other Alsace 2018 in the tasting. The fruit profile is a little darker and there are one or two tannins on show at the back, though I would expect these to resolve well given the undeniable fruit concentration. This may very well develop into a classic wine.| 90
Catherine Petrie: Medium ruby. Another example of simple, one-dimensional, but nevertheless, aromatic fresh-fruit character. Overlaying the fruit there is a slight lift, and I wonder if this wine will show signs of volatile acidity as it develops. The palate is distinctly fresh, cool, and crisp. Tight and unyielding in its youth. Chalky tannins point to potential improvement, should its volatility not derail things. | 85
