Quinta do Noval has become the latest Port shipper to enter the fortified wine’s newest/oldest age-dated Tawny Port category, with the launch of Quinta do Noval 50 Year Old Tawny Port.
Launched in October, 2024, Quinta do Noval 50 Year Old Tawny Port joins a small but growing list of wines from producers taking up the new category, which was formally introduced by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Porto e do Douro (IVDP) in January, 2022.
Made from what the shipper calls a “traditional multi-varietal field blend” of, among others, Touriga Nacional, Sousão, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Francesa, the grapes are foot-trodden in stone lagares, and the finished bottling is a blend with an average age of 50 years, aged in seasoned 640-liter oak casks.
Noval 50 Year Old Tawny: A supreme expression
“Noval has always been known as a Port house capable of producing both great Vintage Ports and old Tawny Ports, and this wine is a supreme expression of the Noval style of Tawny Ports, and a culmination of our constant pursuit of excellence,” said Noval managing director, Christian Seely, of the launch.
“After 50 years of aging in oak barrels, during which time a very high proportion will have evaporated, this remarkable Port wine has acquired a complex intensity of flavors and an austere purity that we believe take us to a new and different dimension in Tawny Port.
“A wine of contemplation and meditation, the result of half a century of silent ageing within the barrel, subject to the constant care of the technical team, the Noval 50 Year Old offers an extraordinary and unique sensory experience to the sophisticated lover of exceptional things,” Seely added.
