Andrew Jefford | Mid-gold in color. Earthy, soft, sweet, and gratifying—and relatively developed for a 2017, with a dripping honeycomb note to it already. A lovely botrytized wealth aromatically, too. On the palate, it is not just generous but massively so, and the basic lineaments of this delivery can’t but impress. There is lashings of honey and rich melon fruit, and these things are delicious; there is just a little musk rose, dabbled about with sweetness. Perhaps it isn’t quite as intricate as you hope it might be, and it is also giving an awful lot away very early in its life, so you wonder how much it will have in reserve. All of those qualifications made, this is special and sensational; there is truly ample acidity, as well as bucketloads of sugar, and that acidity is fruit-saturated, just as we like it. We’re well into the “outstanding” category here. | 94
Anne Krebiechl | The heady apricot notes on the nose are intensified by fully developed botrytis, with its honeyed, golden edge. The palate is concentrated and intensely sweet, the richness bundled around a vivid seam of passion-fruit tartness. This is laser-sharp, vivid, concentrated, and of unusual intensity. Lovely now, but certain to improve and outlast us all. | 96
Stephan Reinhardt | Stewed peaches, wholemeal bread, honey, and botrytis on the nose lead this Beerenauslese to a terribly sweet, piquant, and juicy palate that tastes like a fluid apricot jam. The finish is salty-piquant, very aromatic and fruit-driven. However, there is no rule that says, “The sweeter the wine, the higher the score.” | 80
