Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve | Great color. This is a particularly generous style for the year, with grippy tannins and very noble retronasal olfaction revealing cedary notes, with the usual minerality of this growth. This wine has a great future and even more power than the first growths. Tasted at the château. | 95
Michael Schuster | Fragrant, ripe blackcurrant fruit, and clear mineral impressions on the nose; a concentrated, medium-full wine, with a marked acidity and a very fine tannin; crisply sweet, taut and linear, elegant, long and complex to taste, subtle and aromatic within an overall faint austerity from the marked acidity, and with very fine length. A fine, taut, sinewy, long-term Montrose, not fleshy in the way that the 2016 is, but all there, and with great finesse. A more refined and complete 1996 in character? 1996 was a particularly successful vintage at Montrose. 2032–45+. | 92–93
