Simon Field: Firm colour, with an intriguing spicy, floral, almost sooty nose, with satisfying vestiges of black fruit on the palate, to boot. One is struck by the mineral backbone, the firm acidity and the persistent, not entirely resolved, tannins. Complex, multifaceted and an enjoyable example; for those who derive enjoyment from more cerebral pursuits. 18
Andrew Jefford: Clear now, but lots of red still hanging on to give an overall dark hue. The nose is a little disappointing and has gone very much over towards the light, evolved, herbal style. A Port of stature here, with lots of support for the plum-cherry fruit, making for a chewy yet scented mouthful of fresh fruit with tea-rose overtones. With a better nose, this would have merited a higher score; the palate most definitely satisfies. 16.5
Richard Mayson: Mid-deep colour, with the merest tinge of brown on the rim. Lovely spicy gum citrus smell, still young and vibrant. Rich black-cherry fruit with power and concentration, quite sweet in style (Graham’s?), with a firm, rich tannic backbone lingering on to the finish. Lovely now and over the next 20 years. 17
