Stephen Brook: Very deep red, almost opaque. Reticent but brooding nose of black cherries and plums. Rich, plump, surprisingly supple, but there are ample tannins beneath the sheen of fruit. Has power but there’s nothing brutal here. Sumptuous fruit, with depth, caressing silkiness, and a strong sensuous quality. A splendid wine with slightly low acidity, but the Pétrus clay has produced intensity and depth of fruit that will sustain the wine for some years to come. Very good length. 18.5
Stephen Browett: A very dark color. Impressive, powerful nose of licorice and tar. Sensational richness on the palate here. There is a stunning combination of dark, powerful licorice, sweet fruit and double cream—the whole lot wrapped up in a cloak of silk. A wine to die for! Superbly decadent and sexy. How on earth did they manage to make such an amazing wine at Pétrus when the neighbors on all sides fared so poorly? An astonishing achievement. 18
Andrew Jefford: Black. Big spray of fruit, but a bit simple. Again, hugely impressive depth and wealth though a bit light... Balanced and filtered...Ordered and weighted; savory and earthy and even a little milk. Drinking in 10+ years.
