Roy Hersh: Only the second time I’ve tasted this Port in the past decade. Light ruby core and wide bricking edge. An austere nose upon early sniffing, then as it opened up, reluctantly, fragrant notes of raspberry, wintergreen, anise, and baking spices emerged. Medium-bodied, seductively textured, and stylistically feminine, the soft red wild berry flavors of this Cockburn’s are balanced and polished. Perfectly stored bottles like this provide proof positive that Port from a good vintage may still deliver loads of drinking pleasure even beyond three quarters of a century, so there’s no immediate rush to consume this 1947. That being said, it is incredible at 70 years old and drinking exceptionally well right now. Six thousand cases were produced.
