Michael Schuster: Dark, brick-edged red; a fine, sweet bouquet; a rich, firm palate, still with the dry 1975 tannin much in evidence; abundant fruit, yes, but within a very chewy texture; medium length only, and lacking in harmony for my taste. Voices around murmured, “Softening”—but my view is that the tannin will always dominate, as in the 1945. You have to enjoy the muscle to think this is really fine La Mission, and I don’t. I found this and the 1945 hard work, and very much the least of the great vintages served at lunch. The wine was dry, even with food, and was not a patch on the ’61 and ’59 that followed. Drinking now, and doubtless for many years, in its individual, sinewy style. 16?
